I think what he means, even though he didn't express it very well, is the "mega-squashed-life-killing" mastering that is done now, where the RMS level of a song is only -3db and there's clipping, all to make everything "louder". I agree it kinda sucks, but the concept of sitting around watiting for tape to rewind and having a limited number of takes, all in the name of "analog" seems outmoted to me...
